Extinction Rebellion was created in 2018 by a small band of activists in Bristol, UK. By summer 2021, it was active in 79 countries across all continents bar Antarctica. Pete Gardner, Tiago Carvalho and Maria Valenstain argue that mass protest was key to the movement’s spread around the globe
Tiago holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Cambridge which won the 2022 prize for best dissertation from the Portuguese Political Science Association.
His research interests include social movements, political parties and social classes.
Tiago's current work spans subjects ranging from the housing movement in Lisbon to the dynamics of transnationalisation in Extinction Rebellion.
