Professor of Politics and Gender, PIR, University of Edinburgh

Sarah was previously Professor of Politics & Gender at Royal Holloway, (2020–22), Birkbeck College (2017–2020), and the University of Bristol (2009–2014).

She is the author of four research monographs (New Labour’s Women MPs, 2004; Women and British Party Politics, 2008; and Sex, Gender and the Conservative Party, with Paul Webb, 2012).

Feminist Democratic Representation

Her most recent, award-winning book is Feminist Democratic Representation (2020, with Karen Celis).

Sarah is currently completing Designing and Building Feminist Institutions, which draws on her experiences seconded to the UK House of Commons in 2015–16 and the drafting of The Good Parliament Report, and her gender-sensitive parliaments research with the CPA and UN Women.

Following the establishment of the Commons Reference Group on Representation and Inclusion, Childs’ most notable impact is the formal rule change to the UK House of Commons Standing Orders permitting proxy voting for MPs on babyleave.
