After studying political science at the University of Amsterdam, Pieter completed his PhD in 2011 at ARENA, Center for European Studies, at the University of Oslo.
He worked as a senior researcher at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center and as associate professor in European studies and professor in political science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim.
In early 2024, he returned to the Netherlands as chair in European politics and society in Groningen.
Pieter's research focuses on the tensions between European integration and globalisation, the dynamics of political conflict in the public sphere, and it implications for democracy.
His work has been published in the Journal of European Public Policy, the European Journal of Political Research and the British Journal of Political Science among others.
He frequently appears as a commentator on European politics in the news.
