Maria received her PhD from the Free University Berlin at the Research College (KFG) The Transformative Power of Europe and has subsequently been a Fox International Fellow at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Centre for International and Area Studies at Yale University.

She has published on regional and international organisations in the European Journal of International Relations, Democratization, and Contemporary Politics.
