Rhys' PhD thesis involves a conceptual synthesis of Nathan Sears' 'existential security' framework and Rita Floyd's normative securitisation theories in a nuclear politics context.

He looks to outline a competing framework to the neorealist and just war theorist's case for nuclear deterrence.

Rhys also has a special interest in nonstrategic nuclear weapons and great-power 'hot war' scenarios.

His first article, Addressing Humanity’s Failure to Establish Existential Security, discusses nuclear disarmament and resurgent great-power competition.
