Maoz's main research areas are executive politics, agenda-setting, judicial politics, and ethnic voting.

He studies the strategic aspects of political systems while taking into account the effects of bounded rationality and social cleavages on political behaviour and institutions.

Maoz has published in a variety of journals and published a book about Israeli Politics, Israel's governability crisis: quandaries, unstructured institutions, and adaptation
