His research focuses on populism, democracy, and party systems in international comparison.
After stations at various universities in Germany and the United States, he is an adjunct professor (Privatdozent) at the Helmut Schmidt University / University of the Federal Armed Forces, Hamburg.
His research output includes a variety of articles in journals such as European Political Science Review, Acta Politica and Representation as well as numerous contributions to edited volumes.
He recently published a German-language textbook on populism.
