Matteo's activities and research focus on European integration, EU enlargement policy, differentiated integration and the political economy of EU enlargement.

He has published numerous policy papers and academic articles on these issues.

While regularly cooperating with various research institutes, think tanks, foundations, and public institutions, he has contributed to several European research projects and networks.

Matteo is member of the Balkans in Europe Policy Advisory Group (BiEPAG), among others.

In 2014 he obtained a PhD in Politics, Human Rights and Sustainability from the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, Pisa.
