Lucas is a member of the UFMG democracy and justice research group MARGEM.

At the University of Canberra, he is a member of The Global Citizens' Assembly Network (GloCAN) at the Center for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance.

He is a political sociologist interested in the public sphere, democratic innovations, socio-political vulnerabilities and struggles, and socio-technical controversies.

Lucas co-authored the evaluation report for the world's first Global Assembly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency.

He was also part of the implementation team of Brazil's first Citizens' Assembly on Genetic Editing.
