Jonas obtained his PhD in political science from the European University Institute in 2017, after completing an MPhil at the University of Oxford.

Thereafter, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University.

His research interests include autocratic politics, democratisation, political parties, and social movements.

His work has appeared in journals including European Journal of Political Research, Perspectives on Politics, Political Studies, and Governance.
