Helene’s main research interests include theories of international relations, democracy and foreign policy, the European Union's external policies, EU enlargement and Norwegian foreign policy.

Her work has appeared in journals such as the Journal of Common Market Studies, International Affairs, Journal of European Public Policy, Cooperation and Conflict, and Global Affairs.

Her most recent article is Rethinking Liberal International Order: The EU and the Quest for Global Justice in International Affairs, 99,6, 2023.

She is editor of the book series Routledge studies on the European Union and global order.
