Illiberal politics are a way to understand the process by which ruling elites (mis)use democratic institutions of the state to create an electoral advantage for themselves with the aim to remain in power indefinitely. With a focus on Southeast Europe, Damir Kapidžić explains the concept's roots in institutional legacies of past regimes
Associate Professor, Faculty of Political Science, University of Sarajevo
Damir’s research looks at ethnic conflict, political parties and power-sharing, as well as the process through which democratic and authoritarian politics are institutionalised.
He currently advises several deliberative mini-public processes in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and is the principal investigator of the Horizon 2020 research project Contexts of Extremism in MENA and Balkan Societies at the University of Sarajevo.
