Across the Amazon, Indigenous women are at the forefront of the fight for democracy, environmental justice, and human rights. In a world where extractive industries threaten their land and lives, they are not just resisting destruction — they are transforming political systems, writes Camila Montero. From grassroots mobilisation to high-level policy-making, their leadership is shaping the future of environmental democratic governance
Camila specialises in gender, democracy, and political representation.
Her research focuses on intra-party democracy and the barriers women face in political party organisations.
While primarily studying European political parties, she also explores gender and party dynamics in Ecuador, her home country.
She has conducted research stays at prestigious institutions, including the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership at King’s College London and the Department of Political Science at the University of Barcelona.
Camila has worked on international projects examining legislative oversight and gender discrimination in parliaments across Europe.
Her expertise spans both quantitative and qualitative methods, with experience in modelling, text-as-data methods, and elite interviewing.
Camila's research has received external support, including third-party funding from Austrian institutions.
Recently, her dissertation project was honoured with the Doctoral Fellowship of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the highest distinction for doctoral students in Austria.
Beyond her academic work, Camila is passionate about issues at the intersection of gender equality, democracy, and environmental justice.
Recently, she has been writing about Indigenous women’s leadership in South America, analysing their roles in resisting anti-democratic governments, violence, and environmental destruction.
Camila is particularly interested in how this activism connects gender equality, the rights of nature, and the global fight for more inclusive democracies.
