Anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment has surged in Romania, especially since the 2024 presidential elections. Avery Gozu argues that illiberal candidates' weaponisation of homophobia runs deeper than surface-level insults – it is embedded in a socio-cultural web of hetero-nationalism and hegemonic masculinity
Master's Student, Gender, Minorities and Policy Studies, National University of Political Studies and Public Administration, Bucharest
Avery holds a degree in International Relations and European Studies.
She has a deep passion for feminism and gender analysis, which she uses to expose systemic inequality, to amplify the voices of sexual and gender minorities, and to advance feminist perspectives.
Her research interests centre on minority rights, especially transgender and sexual rights in Romania.
She is keen to understand social inequalities and how they relate to the performativity of gender.
Given her academic interests and experience as a transgender woman, she also writes queer and feminist poetry in her free time.
Avery's most recent work was featured in the Bucharest art exhibition Queerencia, by Artoma Art Community.
