As a politically interested person who was not born in this country, I have a different view on this. I do not see that the ‘government was forced to resign.’ For me, this move appears as opportunistic as the Kok Cabinet’s resignation because of Srebrenica – 6 weeks before the general elections.
Because the Dutch political system is so fragmented, and the story is not new, this scandal involves almost all moderate parties in government and opposition, so the question is who is forcing whom to resign is dubious. So far it seems to me that the governing parties rather gained than lost with the resignation, so it is hard to see that they were forced to make this step. I think that the resignationn of the cabinet is a tactical manouvre to reshape the final conversation before the general election.
